Lecce – The Essential Guide

last update 01.02.2025

Lecce is a small town located in the heel of the Italian peninsula. One or two days are enough to visit the town, however Lecce can be used also as the basis to explore the larger Salento region with all the famous beaches and locations on the sea.

What to see in Lecce

-              Anfiteatro Romano

-              Teatro Romano

-              Castello Carlo V

-              Duomo

If you walk in the old town, starting in Piazza Sant’Oronzo, you will see many churches that are worth a visit. The architecture is baroque and the intern of the churches is rich of art.

Where to eat

The town center is full of good restaurants and there’s no risk to find a bad place. Around Piazza Sant’Oronzo you have the choice between many options. The style is in general simple, very characteristic and the personnel is always really welcoming. The food is in most of the cases based on the local traditions and ingredients. I cannot suggest a specific restaurant.

Some of the traditional dishes are:

-              Pezzetti di cavallo (horse meat)

-              Polpo alla pignata (Octopus)

-              Turcineddhi  (made of the internal parts of the cow)

-              Fave e cicorie (broad beans and chicory)
